GS&NS: Talk about your writing process. Do you flip open a notebook when the moment strikes you? Do you have specific music you listen to? Share and explain.
Hannah: I tend to wait until some line, some interesting or strange or beautiful phrase strikes me and I know that I have to write it down and turn it into something. Or maybe the scenery is something I feel like I have to describe, like in “Utah”; I couldn’t just let the cliffs go without commemoration, even they were just a piece in a story I needed to tell.
GS&NS: What advice would you give to emerging writers? Another way to think about it: what advice would you give to your younger self?
Hannah: Honestly, I still consider myself an emerging writer, because although I’ve been writing since I was very young, I think I have a lot to learn.
...So my advice would be the same advice I give myself constantly: keep writing, write always, write even when you’re not sure you feel like it. Read, of course, and pay attention to the techniques and voices of other writers, but just keep writing.
