Where are you from?

I am from Lares, Puerto Rico. A place not many have heard of right in the NorthWest center of the island. I also lived 15 years in Orlando, FL.

What kind of art do you create? (and whatever else you’d like to share…)

What was your source of inspiration for “Ocean Wave”?

This was actually a prompt that i found on Instagram and i believe it combined two ideas. One was the ocean and the other "a journey's end". From this "'Ocean Wave" was born.

Are there any artists or writers that you’re loving at the moment? Share and explain.

I have always loved Pablo Neruda, but life has gotten in the way of my reading habits so I am currently not reading much.

What advice would you give to emerging writers? Another way to think about it: what advice would you give to your younger self?

Keep on writing, fight through writer's block. Don't wait for inspiration to come to you, go to it and most of all always write from the heart.

Interview

with Jennifer Santiago Rullan

L

GS&NS: Hi, Jennifer! Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Jennifer: Hello everyone, my name is Jennifer Santiago-Rullan, I am originally from Puerto Rico, raised in Orlando, FL but when I turned 19 I moved once more to the beautiful mountains of Puerto Rico where I reside now. I am now 25 years old, I am a Administrative Professional during the day, a freelance web designer in the afternoons and a writer at heart. I take my inspiration from the things around me, specifically the nature that surrounds me as you will notice in a lot of my writings. I also draw and water color, dabble in graphic design, write poetry, enjoy the occasional ceramic creation and I dance.

GS&NS: Your poem, “Ocean Wave”, utilizes an ocean wave to depict the journey of the speaker. Why make that comparison? What does it achieve?

Jennifer: I believe that somethings you can feel like an ocean wave in the middle of a bast ocean of people. The "currents", being. The world around us and the way it influences us and pushes us do things, to act a certain way. The darkness of a deep ocean represents the many fears we have as we make decisions, as we travel though life. There is disorientation and a feeling of being lost, also a strong longing for some rest and stability. I think that it is a feeling that many young adults experience. In the last stanza comes the acceptance that only living life through will tell you where you are going and what awaits you.
