GS&NS: What advice would you give to emerging writers?

Kaitlinn: I still consider myself an emerging writer, so something I am actually still learning and encourage others to do is not to hold back. I feel myself always fighting the impulse to filter what I’m saying and holding back from being honest about the things that are very personal in my writing. What I have to remind myself is that I don’t have to come to the page with everything figured out, or with a pretty story. I can bring my messy past, my weird insecurities, and all those fears to the page and I don’t have to make those sound appealing. My writing isn’t a place to hold back from being vulnerable -in fact it’s the place I can be exposed and there’s enough space to navigate that. Don’t police your thoughts due to shame or fear or being judged.
