Interview

with Lauren Long

L

GS&NS: HI, Lauren. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Lauren: Hey y'all. Just kidding, that's generic southern jargon. I'm a 20 something girl, trying to make a name for myself in Birmingham. I'm a messy person in my mind and I believe that's why I've been gifted the desire to splash my words onto paper in the pursuit of some kind of artistic relief. Typically you'll find me writing late at night, that's when I feel most inspired.

GS&NS: “Firecrackers Wait For No One” addresses critical issues related to Feminism and gender equality. Would you comfortably call your poem ‘political’ and would you consider yourself a political writer?

Lauren: In no way do I consider myself a political writer. I'm too soft. I wear my heart on my sleeve too often for that. This poem in particular, I wanted to convey some of the social issues that women today face and portray those of us who are breaking the mold. Women in today's society have moxie. We don't wait around for others to validate our existence.
