GS&NS: “Deconstruction” addresses white male privilege, Feminism, and identity politics in general. Would you comfortably call yourself a political or even a Feminist writer? Why or why not?

Carly: I would not consider myself a political writer but I often do get inspired to write about politics. I will always promote and believe in equality and it is something that I will forever fight for. I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a Feminist writer but I do believe in feminism. I believe that all people should be equal- I’m scared for our future.

GS&NS: Who or what inspires you to pick up a pen? Any musicians, writers, or artists that have recently captured your attention?

Carly: I get inspired when I’m passionate, even more so when I’m pissed off. Our political climate is absolutely something that has recently provided me with a lot to say. I’ve recently been really into a rap group that goes by the name Run the Jewels. One of the members, Killer Mike, recently did an interview series with Bernie Sanders and I loved it! I’ve always been a fan of rap music due to the poetic complexities and strong political messages.

GS&NS: What advice would you give to emerging writers?

Carly: If I could give my younger self advice it would be to stay passionate and keep writing. As I’ve gotten older I have not made it a priority to write and I do regret that. I also think that it’s important to stay passionate about things that inspire you and to create opportunities to be happy and feel successful.
