Over 200 GGIs responded to our survey posted on our Facebook and Twitter account 95% of GGIs have travelled solo, although only 34% state this is their preferred method of travel. 51% prefer to travel in small groups of friends 5% prefer to travel in a group 9% prefer to travel with their partner 88% say they feel safe when traveling solo 84% of GGIs have experienced some form of harassment when traveling The most common forms of harassment include catcalls (72%) and receiving unwanted attention from strangers (74%), although GGIs also reported being physically assaulted, followed, verbally abused, robbed and drugged when traveling. GGI’s share their tips and tricks with us ‘know the good/bad areas and the neighborhoods, always have a phone plan/provider, make sure you check with people back home often, try not to stand out, do not wave money or expensive belongings in the face of strangers, speak your foreign language quietly (no need to attract attention!)’ ‘Know yourself & your limitations.
