I LEFT MEXICO to move to Scotland when I was 23 years-old. Through there are stark differences between the two countries in food, weather, history and people, I quickly saw my country in a new light. Hearing Scottish people tell me marvellous stories about their holidays in Mexico, I was ashamed to confess that despite being a native, I was not well acquainted with my own country. But I think that is true for a lot of us, we are not often tourists in our own country – so I decided to change that. During my planning stages I realised you can break a trip to Oaxaca into three main sections, coast, city and mountains. Because of the changing landscapes, rolling hills, aquamarine seas, indigenous history, and existing artisanal work, you should aim to see all three in one go. Oaxaca is bigger than countries like Austria and Greece. It is almost a country of its own, thus a 7-day trip might be barely enough to grasp the diversity of this region. ‘I’m a Girl Gone International because every country I have visited is like an extension of my home and the friends I’ve made are like a new family.’
