CANADA | Rye Whisky
Influenced by its Scottish ancestors, Canadian
whisky’s main ingredient is corn and is still
aged in charred oak barrels, but with the
addition of rye. The Canadian whisky Crown
Royal Northern Harvest Rye was ranked the
best whisky in the world in 2015.
GREECE | Ouzo
Once described as ‘a substitute for
absinthe without the wormwood,’ this
ethyl alcohol is distilled in copper and
flavored with anise. Ouzo turns a
milky-white colour when served with
ice or water and is traditionally served
as an aperitif with mezedes
(appetizers).
MEXICO | Tequila
The Aztecs made a drink out of femented
agave, but it wasn’t until the 16th century
when Spanish conquistadors ran out of
brandy and began distilling agave that
tequila was born. Named for an area in
Jalisco, outside the city of Tequila, this
regional drink is not to be confused with
its Oaxacan cousin, mezcal
(with the worm).
ARGENTINA | Fernet
This bitter and aromatic spirit is distilled
from grapes and flavoured with a number
of herbs and spices, including myrrh,
rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, aloe
and saffron. Frequently served as an
aperitif, you’ll also see it mixed with
coffee or in a Coke.
