Nomadic Families Profiles
Erin
Australian
from Travel With Bender has been
traveling with her husband and two children
for over three years.
Does long-term travel present any obstacles?
This lifestyle can be hard, but it can also be fun. The look of awe
and wonder on their faces is priceless. We’ve had more fun at
Disneyland with the kids then we did with just the two of us. The
only problem I’ve had with long term travel is luggage space. We
keep this to a minimum for obvious reasons. You may be tempted
to take books and shoes and mountains of clothes, don’t. Keep
luggage to a minimum because when your plane lands in a new
location you’ll be juggling sleeping children along with your luggage.
What are some of the ways you’ve seen this lifestyle
influence your children?
Our children are socially adaptable. They know how to play with a
child whose only common language is a smile. They are educated
in currency, languages, geography and more. They don’t see
borders as a hindrance, but something to be conquered.
Would you recommend this lifestyle to others?
No. Does that surprise you? The nomadic life is not for everyone.
I will always recommend a gap year or time away with your family
to bond and learn. But living nomadically can be challenging
financially, relationally and physically. Like most things, you have
to be passionate about it to make it work.
