Nadzirah Hashim, 29
Launched in the summer of 2013, Tanks & Kinis is the
brainchild of three summer lovers with distinct personalities, Nadzirah Hashim, Rachel Lai and Diyana Hashim.
“As lovers of the sun, sea and beach, the average attire for
a wanderlust soul like ours would have to be beachwear
and swimwear. And here at Tanks & Kinis, we carefully
source and handpick the brands we choose from South
East Asia so each of these pieces can showcase an
individual’s personal style.”
What’s the best thing about being your own boss?
I can work at the hours that work best for me. I like working at night but
not too much in the mornings. So that really helps!
How did you launch your
business?
It all happened after I left the previous website
that I founded, friendlyfashion.my and I had
just joined another company, Luxola.com as a
Marketing director for Malaysia. The idea had
been around for awhile and I was talking about
it with my friend now business partner Rachel
about how we both loved bikinis and decided
to experiment in July 2013 by sourcing for
some in Thailand and Philippines and selling
to Malaysians only through Facebook. Then
eventually we looked into selling it abroad and
crowdfunded from some friends to start our
website.
How do you select the products
you stock?
We select them based on the fact that they
are unique and made in South East Asia. The
whole idea is to be recognised as the site to
visit for swimwear and beachwear brands
from this region. Seeing as there are so many
beautiful beaches here, I thought it would be
a great reminder that we also have beautiful
clothing to go with their beach trips.
Fave product from your shop?
Anything Bandeau related is my personal fave.
Where inspires you?
For now, it is definitely Bali. It has so much culture
and yet merging modernity. And while some parts are
getting a bit commercialised, the Balinese still know
that they must keep their tradition strong.
What is your colour palette for next
season?
We are looking at more basic colours but with
intricate details.
