MIND & BODY
Holiday like the Dutch
The Dutch are well known for their exemplary
work-life balance; leaving work at decent time to
enjoy the evening and using all of their 26 vacation
days. Many Dutch people plan extended vacations
of up to 6 weeks in the summer allowing any leisure
sickness to be a distant memory while also allowing
enough time to properly disconnect.
LEISURE SICKNESS
The term ‘leisure sickness’ was
coined by Dutch psychologists
Ad Vingerhoets and Maaike van
Huijgevoort and symptoms are
general flu like aches and pains
as well as headaches and
fatigue. Sufferers have difficulty
transitioning from a work to
non-work environment and the
study also claims that most have
a high need for achievement and
a high sense of responsibility.
