I feel honoured to have been accepted into their community, albeit for a short time. What was the biggest challenge you faced on the ship? Not having access to the internet. It helped me realise how reliant we are on the internet for communication. We received daily news updates from the head office and I had an email account on board that enabled me to stay in touch with my father on a regular basis, but that was it. My limited interaction with the outside world forced me to be present and appreciate the here and now. It was a journey in more ways than one. Who was the most interesting person you met onboard? The Chief Officer became like an uncle to me. We have stayed in touch via email and since the journey, we were able to meet up for a drink when his ship was at port in Athens. How hard was it to plan this journey? I started the planning stage a year in advance and I decided to go through an agent. I chose to organise it via The Cruise People, a company specializing unusual and interesting cruise alternatives. I think for this type of trip it is important to be equipped with as much information as possible.
