• Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. This is a rip-roaring tale based on the true
life journey of the author, whose colourful path has seen him living in a Bombay
slum, working for the Mafia, and acting in Bollywood. What I find most staggering about this heady 944-page novel is that the author wrote this book three times
as the first two copies were destroyed by prison guards.
• Breath by Tim Winton. I could have chosen any one of Tim Winton’s beautiful
novels. In Breath, Tim Winton describes the landscapes and seascapes of Australia
with such rugged clarity that each page holds me mesmerised.
• After You’d Gone by Maggie O’Farrell. If I had to pick my all time favourite writer,
Maggie O’Farrell may well just be it. I’ve devoured all of her novels and whenever a new one is released I treat it like a much anticipated gift to savour. After
You’d Gone is her first novel and I have sobbed more over these pages than at
any book since.
