MOOCs have become the latest educational craze since the first course was set up in 2012 by a joint Stanford MIT spin off in response to high University tuition fees .
Now many of the world ’ s most prestigious Universities are offering large scale free University level courses taught by professors or tutors using video , readings , problem sets and tutor forums in a wide range of subjects .
These platforms which are growing at a rapid rate can be accessed by anyone around the globe with internet access .
Despite some critics saying the internet has already freed content for anyone with a web browser , MOOCs give an actual course structure to the content , expert knowledge and a form of certification or accreditation which a browse of Wikipedia cannot give you .
Bear in mind that MOOCs are relatively new and employers currently seem to be ambiguous towards them . However , with many more Universities around the world signing up to the platforms for fear of missing out on the next big shift in education , online learning has just become very exciting for us Girl Gone Internationals with a lifelong lust for learning .
