Rana Plaza Disaster
In the fashion industry there have been many incidents that have caused many people to be injured and killed. One of the biggest incidents and one of the most recent disasters, is the Rana Plaza.
Sources have said that it is the deadliest accident of a garment factory in history!
The Rana Plaza was a Clothing Factory in Savar Upazila, Dhaka District in Bangledesh. Sohel Rana was the owner of the building and the Rana Plaza was the home of a bank, several apartments, a couple of shops and numerous clothing factories. There were around 5,000 people employed at the Rana Plaza. This deadly factory manufactured clothes for brands such as Primark, Mango, Accessories, Benetton and Matalan.
On Tuesday the 23rd of April 2013, employees of the Rana Plaza found cracks in the walls. The employees told the
manager about the cracks and they were instructed to come back the next day, to continue working.
On Wednesday 24th of April at 8:45 am, the eight story building collapsed.
The building collapsed because the manager decided to build two exra floors on top of the factory. However, it was illegal to do so. By adding two extra floors meant that more garments were being made.
Overall, there was a total of 1,140 deaths due to the factory collapsing, as well as hundreds of people having their arms and legs amputated. Around 2,500 people were injured. A young girl Reshma survived for 17 days in the rubble before being found.
As it was the managers fault, 13 people have been arrested for the building falling, as well as all of the inspectors being fired, as they didnt take legal actions when they found the cracks.
