as they flew through the understory . And fantastic malachite butterflies landed on our clothes , attracted to the salts from our sweat . Where there are butterflies there are caterpillars and we were not disappointed .
On the Argentina side , we were able to get to within a few feet of the Devil ’ s Throat , where an amazing amount of water enters a tight gorge at an incredible speed . Of course , there were sightings of monkeys and red brocket deer . A South American coati mother was followed closely by five juveniles across the lawn near our hotel . Several species of rodent , from smaller guinea pig sized ( agouti ) to larger , sheep-sized species ( capybara ) were found , often living near people in local parks . The golden tegu lizard was seen many times ,
while a juvenile iguana stood his ground in the road not the slightest bit phased by our bus a couple of feet from him . And jaguar prints were found on two separate trails . It is always a pleasure to return to Gilroy after such a journey . I took over 25,000 photos and loved every minute of this trip . I can hardly wait for my next adventure .
