Not much space for my editorial in this issue so I ’ ll be brief .
First , I want to congratulate the Gilroy Assistance League ( GALS ) for putting together yet another successful Impressions Home & Garden Tour . It ’ s such a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and the monies are allocated to local community groups each year at an awards luncheon . ( See page 47 ). The Demers ’ home , featured in this issue , was one of three homes showcased on the tour . ( See pages 25-26 ).
This issue was fun to put together and a little tough on the waistline as Larry and I visited all our favorite local restaurants . The Great Eats of Gilroy , In Our Opinion is just a sampling of the dining cuisine that Gilroy has to offer . We hope you visit one of the restaurants — be sure to mention that you saw them in these pages and enjoy . ( See pages 42-45 ).
As the Garlic Festival approaches we thought it would be nice to feature the new things to look forward to at this year ’ s Festival . There ’ s quite a bit cooking for this year ’ s event . ( See pages 6-7 ).
For close to 50 years , Gilroy has been home to Goldsmith Seeds , and the Goldsmith family has made Gilroy their home . During those years , the business thrived and the community benefited from the generosity and support of the Goldsmiths . We celebrate the legacy they leave behind and thank them for being part of what makes Gilroy Great . ( See pages 16-17 ).
Larry and I continue to be huge supporters of our downtown and continue to feel that the heart of any community lies within its boundaries . So , we hope you check out all the fun things happening this summer in our downtown and make a point to support efforts to make our downtown a thriving , active , fun place to be . ( See pages 28-29 ).
Chelsea Chilman , Gilroy ’ s 17-year-old humanitarian proves that you are never too young to make a difference in the world . We first became aware of Chelsea through the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and were honored to sponsor the High 5 award that was presented to her . ( See pages 32-33 ).
We hope you enjoy this issue of Gilroy Today .
