A small
city with a
big reputation
Vicky Brandt says Wellington is a vibrant city and has a lot to offer
visitors. You’ve never heard of a cruise programme of the dullest
places in the world for a reason, so Wellington’s 76 passenger liner visits
already scheduled for the 2013/14 season indicates it’s a place the
world is interested in.
“The increase in cruise ships visiting Wellington is great for the region
and the city. It’s a vibrant compact city with lots of great attractions,”
says Vicky. “Te Papa, the Cable Car, Botanic Gardens, the Weta
Cave, Zealandia… to name a few. Great events are held in Wellington
throughout the year. WOW, the Sevens, the International Festival of
the Arts. There are shows and events on all the time. We have a wide
variety of restaurants, cafes and bars. There are great shopping areas
in the city and surrounding areas – all of which are quick and easy to
get to – including Johnsonville Shopping Centre where we are. A short
and scenic trip on the train and you’re in the closest shopping centre
to the CBD.”

Despite Welly being one of the world’s most compact places – the
Compact Capital… let’s trademark that – Vicky says that the suburban
shopping centres are still very community orientated.
“For my business in particular, we offer a loyalty programme which
encourages our customers to come back. It really is back to basics
and all about putting yourself in the customer’s shoes. Offer your
customers a great range of gifts, homeware and kitchenware. Have a
well-presented store. Keep the stock fresh and the store looking clean
and inviting.
“Staff have the biggest role to play, even more so now with so many
people buying online. Having the right people who enjoy what they
are selling is a key. Involve the staff in decision-making so they are
and feel they are a vital part of the business. Empower people with
