PAGE 4 WINTER 2013 Jack Petchey Award evening at Queens Theatre, Hornchurch B TW RE N EPP IN G OO D The Jack Petchey Awards evening may have been quite a while back – June in fact, but the achievements of the girls and Leaders should still be recognised as being very important. The evening was organised by the Jack Petchey Foundation at the Queens Theatre Hornchurch hosted by Sasha Hudson. The welcome and introduction was given by County Vice President Joy Barrow and was followed by entertainment by Abbie Bright. Further performances by the 3rd Cranham Park Guides and Izzie Kerwin added just the right amount of glitz to the evening. Closing remarks and thanks were given by County Commissioner Jan Knight who paid tribute to the achievements of all the award winners and to the girls who provided the entertainment. Jan also thanked the Jack Petchey Foundation who do so much to support Girlguiding Essex West. GGEW NEWS PAGE 5 1st South Weald Brownies were celebrating in style on 12th November when, exactly to the day, they celebrated their 75th birthday with a very special cake made by a Leader from Loughton. It looked good and tasted better! On Saturday 20th July 2013, despite budget cuts from the council, a scaled down version of The Dagenham Carnival re-named, The Peoples Parade, took to the streets of Dagenham. 18 groups attended including majorettes, dance schools, karate club, police cadets and Trinity School Drummers (where three of our Leaders work and one Brownie attends) unfortunately only a few of our Guiding group could attend, including one Rainbow - Isabelle Dove, five Brownies - Bethany Hatt, Zoe Coles, Chloe Gibbs, Esther Rotimi, Scarlett Thake and three Guides - Amy Bennett, Megan Carter & Lauren Mullett. Everyone had a great time with the sun shining although not too hot ! County Silver Brooch for Chris Hewes and Rosemary Jeffery at County Social Evening At the County and Division Team social evening in July Jan Knight thanked everyone for all that they had done for guiding in the past year. They had certainly risen to the challenges set before them and had lots of fun and adventures along the way. Various presentations were made detailed below. After a delicious spread of food prepared by Gill, Karen and Sylvia, they were then treated to some light entertainment – a favourite sketch of Jan’s from the Thurrock Scout and Guide Gang Show. The Old Bags, Queenie, Doris and Ethel a.k.a. Tricia, Nicky and Sarah, were very well received. So much so that they have been booked to entertain again next year. Presentation were made to:- Vanessa McDonald and Nicky Street were awarded their Leadership Qualification certificates; Jane Smith was given a thank you for her term of office as North West Division Commissioner; Janice Nokes was presented with her 40 years long service award. In addition to the above Colonel Mark Bryant, Deputy Lieutenant for Havering, presented County Silver Brooches to both Chris Hewes and Rosemary Jeffery. Here is just a flavour of why Chris and Rosemary received their prestigious awards. We are hoping to keep the carnival going but cuts to the funding may mean this is the last parade, which is a shame because it has been an annual event for the past 60 years and the local groups and community would like it to survive. Coral Dunnill-Gosling (Brown Owl) 11th Romford Brownies Young Leader Training – 5th Sep O RL HA W T EAS CK O RR THU Three girls, Helen Carter, Taylor Green and Skye Whatling attended the Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony at the GUIDES Queens Theatre to receive certificates and medallions in recognition of their contribution to guiding and the community. All girls have played leading parts in Manuden Guides, and now Rangers, by being patrol leaders and taking a full part in all activities, outings, camps and holidays, as well as always turning up to help out with events in the village such as fetes, the Fun Run and service projects. It was a great, fun-filled evening, and we were so proud of our girls. A group of Guides went up to Madame Tussauds, using Skye’s Jack Petchey award money to pay for the tickets. Four girls, including Skye and Helen had achieved the highest award in Guides, the Baden-Powell Challenge Award, and they, along with Taylor and Kimberley, had chosen to have them presented at Madame Tussauds- Helen, Kimberley and Skye by Shrek, and Emmie by the Queen! Another proud moment for us at Manuden- and another great occasion, much enjoyed by us all. Glynis Prothero Manuden Guides and Rangers A REWARDING WEEK FOR MANUDEN TH UR UPM INS RO CK WE TER ST Romford Division Cooking Competition On 30 June 34 Guides showed off their culinary skills and took part in the Romford Division cooking competition. Cooking was on gas burners with dishes ranging from stir fries, spag bog, bangers and mash through to pancakes and fruit fondue. Pam and Olive from Trefoil Guild did a grand job food tasting and judging each patrol’s team work plus other criteria to reach a very close decision on a winning team. The gold went to Jessica Burrow, Molly Roberts and Millie Redgrave, silver to Anna Osborn, Emily Crane and Hannah Bennett both patrols from 1st Collier Row Guides and the bronze to Daisy Barrett, Grace Robinson, Georgia Phillips, Megan Carter and Lauren Mullett of 11th Romford Guides. Well done to all the Guides – you did a grand job. Norma Cotter Chris Hewes – Brentwood Division Chris has given more than 20 years of service to guiding and in that time shehas been a Brownie Leader, District Commissioner, Division Commissioner (holding both commissioner roles at the same time for a period of four years), and Marketing and Communications Adviser for both Division and County. Currently Chris is a District Adminstrator, a Mentor, Divi sion ID Verifier, County Adult Support Adviser and Chair of our County Membership Support Sub Group. Rosemary Jeffery – Romford Division:- Rosemary has given over 42 years service to guiding. She is a very enthusiastic and motivated Leader who has held various roles at unit, District, Division, County and Region levels. In addition to running an excellent unit incorporating many unit camps and District International trips Rosemary has also been County Outdoor Activities Adviser and organised a number of County Camps. County BP Adviser is another successful role that Rosemary has held. Currently Rosemary is Chair of our Programme and Adventure Sub Group and a Trainer, which is a Region appointment. What a Team! Jan quoted Babe Ruth – “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime”. Jan is very pleased with the team in Girlguiding Essex West. Their performance in the last year has improved significantly. However, there is no time to be complacent because Jan believes that the team have yet to reach their full potential. But she is confident that they will. Thank you once again to the whole team. HAVE YOU MISSED?
