PAGE 4 WINTER 2010 GGEW NEWS PAGE 5 County Day 2010 St Marks School, Harlow t was a very special County Day at the beginning of last month as it marked the completion of the handover from Linda Taylor to Jan Knight as County Commissioner. The presentations in the main hall after lunch took longer than usual as Linda thanks all the members of her team who were leaving their posts with her. There were a number of special presentations to Linda who was awarded the Anglia Brooch, County Silver Brooch and was appointed as a Vice-President by County President Avril Brampton. Other Vice-President appointments were given to Margaret Henderson, Linda Harris and David Henderson. Diane Dickerson was also presented with an Anglia Brooch and Long Service awards were made to Ann Hails, 30 years Avril Brampton, 40 years and Marjory Law, 50 years. Special Centenary Thanks Badges were also presented to Caitlin, a Brownie, and Penny, a Guide who had both worked very hard during all the Centenary Events. I ur Centenary year was marked by the planting of and English Oak tree outside Romford Town Hall on 20th October. Centenary Champions Linda Harris and Margaret Henderson, together with Linda Taylor and Jan Knight were joined by leader of Romford Council Michael White, and MP Angela Watkinson, as The Mayor officially planted the tree which should be an impressive size by the time of the 200th celebration in 2110 O e had 50 members of the Girlguiding family past and present in attendance for the Newport Vision event which was held in Newport Village Hall. It was a marathon evening that started at 5.30pm and finished at 8.15pm. We Reviewed the Centenary year by putting together a photograph display, we Rediscovered the worldwide dimension of guiding by visiting the four World Centres with food tasting and games. We Recorded the evening by taking a group picture, right, and Reignited guiding by writing our Guiding wishes for the future (mine is to open up a guiding unit for sick children at Addenbrookes Hospital), We Rejoiced and Reaffirmed our Promise with the Chief Guide with the recorded version of the live link up. We tried our best to get the live link up to work but had to resort to the DVD which in the end worked much better and was very exiting. As a surprise for my Mum (Brown Owl 2nd Newport Brownies) and Kerry (Brown Owl for Clavering) I presented them with a bottle of Prosecco each to thank them for their hard work and support. I also surprised the children by giving Georgia Arundal Young leader for 2nd Newport Brownies the opportunity to make her Young Leader Promise on the big night and also presented her with a big medal (a giant chocolate coin with blue ribbon attached). We all iced fairy cakes and decorated them with forget me knots in the centenary colours. At one stage in the evening we had 100 birthday candles lit which was a magical moment. The girls as they do screamed when I turned the lights off and the birthday candles lit the W room. It was an extra special night in more ways than one as it was also my birthday and my Mum surprised me at the beginning of the evening with a chocolate cake and sparklers which I shared with a Widdington Guide as it was her birthday as well. The evening was full of emotions for all involved and certainly an evening that we will never forget. We are now all looking forward to the future with excitement. Sarah Connell
