T
County Craft Team at 1st Warley Guides
e have been very
busy this term with
the girls working
towards their Craft badge. We
had a special evening when
three members of the County
Craft team visited us and helped
the girls with glass engraving,
iris folding and encaustic art.
These were all new crafts for
the girls and it was fascinating
W
to see how quickly the girls learnt to use the irons
to make really good pictures with the different
coloured waxes. They needed different skills to
make the iris folding pictures, but some very good
results were achieved. With the glass engraving,
much concentration and steady hands again
produced some lovely results. All the girls had an
enjoyable evening and achieved some pleasing
results. Our thanks to the County Craft team for
giving their time to helping the girls to learn new
skills and an enjoyable evening.
URFLEET BROWNIES TELL LOCAL MP THAT GIRLS MATTER
P
A group of Brownies from Aveley District joined local MP, Jackie Doyle-Price, to
promote Girlguiding in the community and celebrate 1st Purfleet Brownies’ 37th
birthday with a Throwback Meeting on Monday 15 February. The meeting brought
together girls and members from the Senior Section to celebrate Brownie traditions and
culture. Hornchurch Trefoil Guild member, Marjorie Law, led the group in a traditional
song and dance around the ‘Toadstool’ and a look back at the history of brownies. With
games teaching etiquette skills, the national anthem, a Kim’s memory game and uniform
parade from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s.During the meeting, Conservative MP, Jackie
Doyle-Price had the chance to talk to Sixer, Damisi Olorunfemi about the various activity
badges carried out by members; and asked if the girls had any questions about issues
that affected them for Prime Minister David Cameron – Road Safety and Education were
flagged as important.Tamilore Olorunfemi, Duke of Edinburgh volunteer at the unit said,
“It was good for the girls to see our MP as politics can seem like something just on the
TV and not personal. It shows that girls can have an impact in their community even if
they can’t vote right now, they can make a difference in future.”1st Purfleet Brownies’
Leader, Uzezi
Odjoh said,
“Having Jackie
Doyle-Price
MP attend to
support our
Brownies is
empowering.
I’m passionate
about helping
the Brownies
have their say
and impact
their
community
and would
encourage
individuals to
join and
support girls in
their
communities.”
th Chadwell St Mary’s Brownies 40th Birthday
party. O n Saturday 5th March the Unit celebrated
their 40th birthday with a ‘Kitchen Guru’ party at
Barleylands Farm, Billericay. After donning aprons and chef
hats the Brownies learnt to make pizza dough to make their
own pizzas. While they were cooking, others went off for a
tractor ride around the farm, singing along to popular farm
songs. It was very bumpy and muddy but all were safe
inside the trailer.
This was
followed by
visiting the
baby lambs,
goats and
piglets and all
had great fun
learning how to
feed the
animals.
Slobbery
hands were not
a problem! The rabbit they stroked was happy for the
attention and the guinea pig they held was spoilt by love!
This was followed by a quick visit to the play barn to fire
foam balls everywhere. Everyone then headed back to the
kitchen, stopping to milk the plastic cow on the way. The
pizzas were beautiful and lots of clean plates were left. The
party finished with the cutting of a great Owl birthday cake
made by Snowy as a special treat.
The highlight for me was the way the Brownies all
helped each other, and had lots of fun. The comments from
the staff were that they were the politest and nicest group
they had ever worked with and they hoped we would go
back again. Bev Garnham
