SPRING 2012
uring a very busy year we took an evening to visit
the new local Olympic venue right on our
doorstep, The Lea Valley White Water rafting
Centre, which will be used for the Canoe Slalom event
during this year’s 2012 Olympic games.
The girls were very excited as we took a walk up to
the centre. Once inside we watched boats come tearing
down the rapids and lots of people falling in and having
to be rescued. It
looked really
exciting, shame
you have to be
over 14 to take part! While we were there we enrolled four new brownies into the unit.
They said their promise and had their badges awarded whilst we were at the
centre. When we
had finished we
started our walk
back, stopping at
McDonalds along
the way for a warm
drink and something
to eat.
D
annah and Louisa Smy,
Hannah Webb and Laura
Brooks received their Baden
Powell Award from Division
Commissioner Jenny Aspinall at the
companies celebration evening, in
November.
The evening started with a
shadow puppet show, with every
Guide participating, (part of the
Guides team player badge).
Followed by our Baden Powell
Guides, giving a presentation,
complete with projected photos from
their computer of the whole of their
Baden Powell Challenge, including
their BP Adventure at the ICANDO
centre.

Special visitor at 3rd Aveley Guides
irls at the 3rd Aveley (All Saints) played host to a very special visitor in March when 86
years old Audrey Gannett dropped in to see them. Audrey is a resident of a local old
folks home in
Ockendon, and was, for many
years, a Lieutenant (Assistant
Guider) with a Guide
Company in Romford.
Girls at the Unit talked with
Audrey about Girlguiding
today and how different it is to
when she was a Leader. L to r
in the picture are Rose
Sangers, Libby Whitlock,
Emily Bray and Ellie Light.
Audry’s visit was part of a
bridging the gap between the
generations project run at the
home.
The girls and Audrey really
enjoyed their time together.

N Wednesday 25th of January 2nd Gidea Park Brownies celebrated Burns Night by
making a Scottish
Bookmark, Australia Day
by making a finger puppet and
Chinese New year by colouring in
a dragon.
The girls had great fun with the
dragons as they were allowed to
use glitter on them. We are not
sure who had the most glitter on
them at the end of the evening.
This is a photo of the Brownies
with their dragons they turned out
to be very colourful and glittery.

Make use of
your County
Advisers
There is no need for
you to struggle on your
own trying to find new
things for your Unit to
do. The County has a
team of talented
advisers who are there
to help with Walking;
Boating; Holiday and
Camp planning and Arts
and Crafts.
The Arts Team, for
example, has a host of
equipment from Glass
Engraving, Pyrography
to Encaustic Art which
is available for use by
your Units, and one of
the team may well be
able to come along and
help show how best to
use it to make Fathers
Day and Mothers Day
gifts, Greetings cards
and a host of other
attractive and satisfying
items.
The contact details are
in the County Directory,
but the ladies at the
Office will be happy to
put you in touch with
the right Adviser if you
ask them.
BOGOF TRAINING AT CRANHAM
he BOGOF training held at Front
Lane, Cranham recently was a great
success and was enjoyed by all the
Leaders who attended. An earlier session
planned to be held in Harlow had to be cancelled because of the snow but plans are
already in the making for similar training
sessions.
