Epping Forest North revive handicraft competition
n Sunday 29th November 2009 members of Girlguiding Epping Forest North Division took part in a centenary handicraft
competition. Rainbow units (girls aged 5-7), Brownie Packs (girls aged 7-11) Guide Units (girls aged 11 -14) Senior
Section, Young Leaders, Rangers and Adults were all eligible to participate.
In total 23 units across the division, covering Epping, Theydon, Ongar, Waltham Abbey, Upshire and surrounding villages,
took part , over 400 girls, with many entering multiple classes. Some girls even had five different handicrafts on display.
The last handicraft competition was held in 2006 and was run again this year as one of the many centenary events to be
held through out this special time.
The competition was held at Theydon Bois Village Hall. Entries arrived
between 10.00am – 11.00am and were judged over lunch time. Parents,
girls, families and friends were then invited to view the handicrafts during the
afternoon. Refreshments, guiding gifts, a raffle were all available and then
presentations and the raffle drawn at 3.00pm.
Each class was judged according to age groups with rosettes being
awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly commended in each class. Points are
awarded and totalled according to districts.
This year the overall winning district
was Epping and
Theydon, who were
presented with their
trophy.
O
Once all the handicrafts were displayed
in the hall they made a spectacular sight, and adequately reflected all of
the hard work that each of the units and the individual girls had put in
over the term.
The event was well attended and it was a joy to see the girls arrive
and find their handicraft with a rosette on it.
This was a good occasion for all the girls to see that they are part of
a wider organisation and an opportunity for the whole division to get
together and celebrate.
Well done to everyone who took part.

Innova tors
our Young Leaders from Essex West
attended the Centenary Innovate at
Wyboston Lakes, Nr Cambridge in
February.
Hannah Campbell and Sophie French
from Upminster Division and Hannah
Walker and Stephanie Holden from
Hornchurch Division all took part in various
forums as part of their Queen’s Guide
Award (Service in Guiding).
Hannah C took part in “Girls in the
Lead” which was about Youth involvement
within guiding, ways to improve current
youth participation and what can be done
to encourage further youth participation
within Girl Guiding UK.
Sophie took part in “In with the Young”
where they were asked if they knew about
any jobs they could apply for in the Guiding world. Not many
of them did and so the aim of the forum was to understand
why they, like many others, had not heard about them.
They also discussed why they would not go for some of the
jobs and tried to find a solution.
Both Hannah and Steph took part in “GAT Star” which was
about recognising girls in guiding who have actively participated in community action.
As well as attending the forums they each chose a “Why
don’t You” session where they could try out one of many
unusual activities.
They then had a wonderful time attending a party Saturday
F
evening which had a Carnival theme.
It also included indoor snowboarding, a silent auction for
“pink” prizes in aid of Breast Cancer, and all 220 Girls went
outside and made the number “100” which was photographed
from the air and intended for use in February’s Guiding
Magazine.
They came home really tired but were pleased to have
attended the very special “Centenary” Innovate. Stephanie
said “I thought the weekend was a brilliant event which gave
me the opportunity to meet other Senior Sectio n Members
from across the UK, to network with them and to share new
ideas and crafts for my Brownies”
20 girls from Waltham Abbey and Upshire
District had a fantastic time when they went for
a Sleepover at the Science Museum in London.
