Mexico installed a new president in 2024 following the election of Claudia Sheinbaum . It was thought that after statements from Deputy Ricardo Monreal , president of the Political Coordination Board of the Chamber of Deputies , that President Sheinbaum may send a new Law on the Games and Sweepstakes to Congress .
However , this does not appear to be the case based on recent meetings at the end of 2024 . The existing law governing casinos has been on the books for nearly 80 years , having been put into place in 1947 .
While Sheinbaum has set forth a path to eradicate the corruption and extortion that has been happening in the Mexican casinos , it does not appear that a new law will be on the books in the near term . The new secretary of the interior , Rose Icela Rodriguez , will only be having conversations with the owners of the existing establishment to discuss the current regulations .
The goal of the secretary of the interior is to address any existing corruption that may have existed under previous President Andrés Manuel
López Obrador . While the current law is outdated , it does not appear as though there is any desire to modernize the existing law on the books , but regulatory reforms seem on the horizon .
Opportunities Abound
Latin America continues to remain one of the most viable opportunities for expansion around the globe . While eyes continue to remain on Brazil as it is in its infancy in launching a regulated market for sports betting and iGaming , opportunities abound in the country as it looks to other regulated markets in 2025 .
Other markets appear on the horizon , and ones that should be followed for expansion . However , while some markets may remain dormant for now , that does not mean in the short or long term that opportunities do not exist in both the land and online sectors of the gaming industry .
No matter where regulated gaming occurs in the world , every operator still asks three things — what ’ s the tax , who ’ s my regulator , and what is the regulatory structure ?
While each market is localized in how best to prescribe their regulatory structure , it is paramount for consumers and governments to regulate markets across the board as this continues to be a priority . Changes will continue to occur as long as these markets remain unregulated to rein in the bad actors and allow the regulated market to thrive .
