In a survey of 3,000 U . S . college football fans , sports betting affiliate Covers posed the question of whether or not college football players should be paid a cash prize for winning bowl games , in light of the recent shifts with regard to transfer eligibility and name , image and likeness ( NIL ) deals .
The respondents were divided into two main categories of fandom , casual and diehard , and the classes were determined by the number of bowl games the respondent planned to watch over the course of the college bowl season — casuals planned to watch two or fewer , while diehards planned to watch three or more .
Overall , 56.5 percent of respondents indicated that players should be paid for bowl wins , with 43.5 percent voting against . Notably , diehard fans were more in favor of payment ( 57.4 percent ) than their casual counterparts ( 51.7 percent ).
