AGEM July 2024 Recap
• Following the recent legislative developments in Brazil surrounding gaming , James Kilby of Vixio Regulatory Intelligence gave members an update of the current situation and what it may mean for the industry . On June 19 , the Senate Committee on Constitutional , Judicial and Citizenry affairs voted 14- 12 to approve a sweeping gaming expansion bill to authorize land-based casino resorts , bingo halls and video bingo machines across Brazil . Several amendments were approved by the committee , including one to enable casinos to be developed alongside pre-existing resort facilities . The committee vote , which had been postponed on several occasions following a May hearing , now enables Bill 2234 / 2022 to be brought up for consideration on the Senate floor , where the Senate president has committed to holding a plenary vote on the bill , but not until after an upcoming parliamentary recess .
• AGEM Executive Director Daron Dorsey led a discussion among the members about recent legal developments in Mexico , where some operators and suppliers received positive rulings on challenges to the reform decree passed in late 2023 . Such decisions only apply to the parties involved in them , so the industry remains hopeful that the recent decision to consolidate the cases into designated courts will result in clearer guidance . AGEM continues to monitor the situation and will keep members aware of events as they occur .
• Dorsey also provided an update on the recent Federal Trade Commission rule that comprehensively bans new non-competition agreements at the federal level . As expected , several companies commenced challenges to the rule in various courts across the United States . On July 3 , a judge in the U . S . District Court for the Northern District of Texas issued a preliminary injunction against the rule after finding the FTC lacked authority for such a rule . While this preliminary injunction and decision affect the parties involved in the case , many other court challenges and rulings are expected before the rule ’ s effective date in September .
• Korbi Carrison , event vice president of the Global Gaming Expo , provided an update to members 90 days out from the event . She shared that all exhibitors should have received their Customer Invitation programs , which provide unique codes for free passes , and as a result , customer registration is open and experiencing good activity . The exhibitor manual also is now live and available online , giving details of customer support specialists who provide the first lines of support on all show issues . Exhibitors were reminded of the Good Neighbor Pledge , which provides guidelines on when you can visit other exhibitor booths , as well as mindful planning of exhibits and communication among neighbors to share plans . In addition , Carrison shared this year ’ s planning to address logistical changes and efforts to ease the move-in / move-out procedure for everyone .
