David By Michelangelo ....................... Q4/Prose
David By Michelangelo narrates the story of a man trying to convince Michelangelo to sculpture his friend David by narrating his life. The genesis of this piece arrived after finishing a piece in quarter two called Starry Night. I wanted to base my story in a piece of art, just like I did with that poem, but instead of using a painting as an inspiration, I decided to use the sculpture of Michelangelo. This piece evolved significantly during quarter four. It started very differently from what it ended. At first, David's story was about a boy who was very mysterious and kept a secret which ended up being relieved. After sharing my piece with my classmate, Andrea, for peer feedback, she suggested me to change the plot and describe David’s life in a more detailed way. I decided to follow her ideas and suggestions, and my piece got altered significantly. I changed David’s life and based it on the biblical story of this religious character. These changes affected the piece because I did not only inspired myself with a sculpture made by Michelangelo, but I also included elements from the Bible. I honestly believe this is not one of the strongest pieces I have done, but it was one of my favorites to write for many reasons, such as the extensive research I made on David and Michelangelo. I feel somewhat satisfied with the piece because it is complete but I think it could be better and I could add more details. One of my strengths in this piece was adding elements that show up in the Bible, this can be seen in the following quote, “That was our childhood, a pair of young boys holding hands staring up at the sky searching for the Christmas Star.” I was able to connect the story of David with events and details that happened during Jesus’ birth. A specific weakness of this piece is the lack of transitions. David’s story sounds choppy, however, the idea behind the piece is very creative. An area for further improvement could be the addition of transition words to help
the flow of the piece.
