His
Shadow
And there I was,
Behind him, beside him and even under him.
His shadow, my teacher, but always my model.
Copying, imitating and echoing him.
The swoosh of the paintbrush making contact with the adobe domes.
The dimensions that transport us to parallel universes.
The mind-blowing magnitude of the murals.
The ideas penetrating Mexican brains.
Thinking ahead,
Creating the future,
But always remembering,
Who and why we arrived at the past.
He did it all,
I helped him sometimes,
And as a gratitude symbol,
There I was:
“Francisco”, he told me.
“Get your own ideas”.
But I didn’t care,
I was always loyal to him.
Miguel Hidalgo and the abolishment of slavery.
The elements combined into one;
The conquistadors, the natives and the power of the cross,
Humanism in the brain and art in the heart.
The victims and sufferers of the Spanish Conquest,
The irony of politics and their leaders,
Technological advances throughout our history,
Art under the eyes of the common.
Universal and national values transcribed.
More than one thousand words.
