The disaster shocked the world and forced for action to be taken. The company's owner Mohamed Sohel was finally arrested alongside thirteen other people associated with poor working conditions in factories. 60% of factories have been noted as unsafe and another factory was soon after shut down for having a crack in the wall. Authorities did not want to take anymore risks!
It has been said that it will cost over a billion dollars to fix the country's workplaces. Companies such as H&M, Primark and Zara had later agreed to help make the country's buildings safer and families were offered a sum of 10,000 Dollars for each victim of the tragedy who either lost their lives or even limbs because of the collapse.
Although there is no certainty that conditions for factory workers will change, workers are forced to still work due to living in poverty and desperate need of financial gain to survive.
Some of the workers were known to be producing clothes for the well known Company, Primark who have taken big action and are now known as sweatshop free, they also offered to compensate for the many lives that were lost. Like Primark many other retailers choose to have their garments made in factories with good, safe working conditions. American Apparel is also another store which is famously known for being sweatshop free.
We as customers can also help support this by choosing to purchase garments made in sweatshop free factories, so the next time you go into a store and purchase an item of clothing, take a step back and think about how it was made before you decide to buy those really cool pair of leggings, who could have potentially caused someone to lose their live or be one of the many factory workers still suffering today!
