Genetics and Skin Color Unlike a suntan which is produced by external factors, different skin colors are genetic. The type and amount of melanin produced by the skin produces various skin colors ranging from “dark brown” to whitish or pinkish skin tones. Traditionally, the different variations in skin colors are also influenced by geographical factors. Thus, people living in tropical and subtropical regions who are exposed more to the sun's rays have darker skin, while those living in middle latitudes or at the poles of the Earth have lighter skin. This classification used to be in accordance with reality several centuries ago. Nowadays it is no longer valid, since there are many people with dark skin living in temperate areas, while white people can be seen in tropical and subtropical areas. 17
