PEOPLE
Thats right! Audrey Hepbburn is our person of the month. We have all seen her debut performance in Breakfast at Tiffany's right? It was flawless. With fifteen films already under her belt over the past thirteen years Hepburn is unstoppable. Audrey was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Audrey suffered from depression and malnutrition during the Nazi times but that certainly did not prevent her from thriving in the film industry. We interviewed Audrey and this is what we found out...
In terms of education, how did you get to where you are today?
I attended a private girls school in London. Later, I moved to the Netherlands and attended numerous private schools there as well. I went to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and later began a modeling career. As a model, I felt I had found my niche in life.
When did you decide to become an actor rather than a model?
The film producers came calling in 1948, after being spotted modeling by a producer, I was signed to a bit part in the European film Dutch in Seven Lessons. Later, I had a speaking role in the 1951 film, Young Wives' Tale as Eve Lester. The part still wasn't much, so I headed to America to try my luck there.
What did you gain from your move to the USA?
I gained immediate prominence in the US with my role in Roman Holiday in 1953. This film turned out to be a smashing success, and I won an Oscar for Best Actress. This revealed people had a liking for my and I gained more plum roles.
Her beginning film Roman Holiday was followed by another similarly wonderful performance in the 1957 classic Funny Face. Sabrina, in 1954, for which she received another Academy nomination, and Love in the Afternoon, in 1957, also garnered rave reviews. In 1959, she received yet another nomination for her role in The Nun's Story.
What would you claim as the highlight of your career, so far?
The pinnacle of my career is now, playing Holly Golightly in the delightful film Breakfast at Tiffany's this year. For this I received another Oscar nomination that I am extremely pleased with.
Audrey is an inspiration and we were privilleged to have the opportunity to meet her in person and dig deep into her life and to hopefully give all of you an insight into the career and the journey you can take to get there. Heres to many more years of exquisite performances from the beautiful AUDREY HEPBURN...
