Come back to your writing cold – go away from it for a while.

An editor has a keen eyefor professionalism, and even a small slip-up will catch his or her eye.

Don’t trust your first, second, or third drafts.

Engage the world with your senses – you cannot reach a reader without doing so. There is no way for a reader to empathize or sympathize with your characters or your world without concrete imagery.

Patience is necessary with craft. Learn to take rejection. In fact, learn to be emboldened by rejection. Look at those little slips of paper as challenges to improve your craft.

You’re going to have to write regularly. Make it systematic like something you want to do, like a hobby or occupation.

You have to read voraciously. Read often in your field and read in genres you don’t (yet) practice. To become part of the sea of voices worth hearing, you must swim within that sea willingly.
