Future Leaders Learn About Parole

Our agency is actively engaging the leaders of tomorrow. By sharing how parole works in Georgia, our future leaders are learning about our critical public safety and criminal justice role. In early November Senior Hearing Examiners Crystal Moon and Lisa Copeland spoke to Emory law students in Atlanta about the scientific data driven parole process. Hearing examiners prepare the cases for the Board Members to make parole decisions.

In October, Executive Director of Parole Chris Barnett returned to his alma mater, Georgia Southern University, to speak to criminal justice majors. "By ensuring future criminal justice leaders understand the parole process in Georgia, public safety is enhanced for all Georgians," Barnett stated.

You can watch "Released, When Does the Sentence End." It is a 45-minute documentary created by the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia in conjunction with Governor Nathan Deal's office. The film addresses the obstacles to successful reentry by former offenders.

Parole Board Chairman James Mills, Board Members Jacqueline Bunn and Terry Barnard and Executive Director of Parole Chris Barnett attended the Atlanta premiere of the film in August. Governor Nathan Deal and U.S. Attorney John Horn appear in the film and introduced it at the premiere.

"As the Parole Board, our focus is successful reentry and public safety. Gov. Deal is absolutely correct when he says it is important that the public understands why this issue is so critical. We must find more solutions regarding employment and housing as offenders leave our prison system," stated Parole Board Chairman James Mills.
