My fondest memories of Christmas as an only child were going to my grandmother ' s house in Adel , Georgia . Her house was built by my grandfather who was deceased before I was born , and was where my mother , her five sisters and brother grew up . To them , it was a homecoming , to me , it was an adventure filled with old country dirt roads , glimpses of wild animals , mistletoe growing wild in the trees , and a big family gathering .

It seemed like a magical place . I had lots of cousins close to my own age . My favorite memories are of my cousin . She and I would share a room on Christmas Eve . I use the word " sleep " loosely as we actually stayed up most of the night with unabated excitement . Full of wishes , speculation , and discussions of family and friends — this is how we would spend our Christmas Eves . These special times of wonder and sharing were more special than opening the many gifts .
As the years passed , my grandmother died , and so did the tradition of going to the old family homestead each Christmas . Recent Christmases have been observed in suburbia , with a new generation of young cousins growing up who will never experience what it was like to spend Christmas with grandmother . But at least , we all still get together . The family has celebrated the traditions of holiday foods , and family each Christmas even though it hasn ' t always fallen in the same place or exactly on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day ( those are reserved for church ). Marriages , divorces , deaths , and miles of distance now shape the location and time of the celebration , but one thing never changes — the necessity of family connectedness .
For some , family get-together in general can be difficult . Different people with a myriad of different opinions , beliefs , and personalities — all coming together under one roof can be trying at times . Though in spite of all our different idealistic visions of how things should be , it is nevertheless important to come together in the spirit of love , unity , and faith in order to be with our family .
During this holiday season , we would like to give special thanks to all of our advertisers and readers who make it possible for this free community resource to exist . The staff of Georgia Family wishes your family a holiday filled with love , wonder , and joy !
