A Letter from the Editor
It seems that you have somehow found the first ever volume of Gem Rat
Magazine. I imagine that you have several questions: What is this? Who are you? What
is Gem Rat supposed to mean? Can I send you my digital press kit? I imagine that there
are more than four questions, and I’m here to answer them all. But I only have one page
for this, so let’s do four for now.
As for the first, this is an ongoing, seasonal compilation of writing, music, and
visual art of all kinds by independent artists from the state of Idaho. Submissions are
always open. Stay tuned for the summer issue!
Second, I’m Shay. I’m 24 years old, and I live in Boise. I make music through a
project called Magic Hero, as well as scarves, poems, Vines about my roommate’s dog,
and just about anything else I bet I could manage to make. I am the sole editor and
publisher of Gem Rat Magazine. That means I’ve laid everything you’re about to read
out onto a Google document all by myself. Please, hold your applause.
And third, Gem Rat (named for the Gem State, of course) is a creature meant to
symbolize the community of young artists in Idaho. Like rats, we have a bad reputation
for being lazy and unkempt, but once you get to know us, you’ll find that we are perfectly
pleasant creatures. Plus, we’re as clever and resourceful as any animal in the universe,
and you can lure in large groups of us with garbage food.
And fourth, sure. That sounds like a fun read.
Thanks and Regards,
Shay Primrose
