WAVE ENERGY
What is wave energy?
It can actually think of the oceans as two separate sources of energy. The first is thermal
energy due to solar heat, and the second is mechanical energy fed by waves and tides. The
oceans, which cover 70% of the earth's surface, are also the largest solar collectors in the
world. The temperature difference between the overheated water on the surface of the oceans
and the cool water in the deep creates a natural thermal energy. If enough is used, even a
small fraction of this energy is sufficient to meet the energy needs of the whole world.
Wave energy is defined as a type of energy derived from wave movements caused by winds
on the surface of oceans and seas. The movement of the waves beneath the surface of the
water is accumulated by converting them into electricity by means of a wave energy converter
consisting of special turbines. Electrical energy produced by wave energy can be used directly
or can be used for different purposes such as heat generation and water treatment.
Used all over the world.Wave energy is of course preferred in countries with coasts to the sea
and oceans. England, Portugal, Spain, America, Israel and Greece are the countries where this
energy type is used. In our country, wave energy generation studies have started in recent
years. The power plant established in Zonguldak, the pilot region, has a production capacity
of 50 kilowatts. This type of energy, which is an endless, endless source, reduces dependence
on fossil fuels and does not pollute the environment. It enables the transmission of energy to
unreachable places through conventional electricity generation and distribution. Although the
cost of constructing power plants is high, the operation, production and maintenance costs of
wave energy are low. In this aspect, it is a very efficient energy type.
Wave energy, which is an environmentally friendly, efficient and renewable energy type, is a
great potential that can meet the increasing energy needs.
