Design & Technology – AQA – AS 1551 Design & Technology – AQA – A2 2551 Course Outline Product Design (3-D Design) The course is designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. Course Details AS - Design & Technology Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application A written paper of 2 hours: Section 1: Contains compulsory limited response questions Section 2: A choice of 1 question from 2 Section 3: Contains 1 compulsory question (50% of AS, 25% of A2 level) A2 - Design & Technology Unit 3: Design and Manufacture A written paper of 2 hours. (25% of total A level) Paper consists of 2 sections. Candidates answer three questions: 1 question from 3 in each section, plus a final question from either section. Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making Coursework – a design and make exercise of approximately 50 hours. (50% of AS, 25% of A2 level) Unit 4: Design and Making Practice Coursework – a design and make exercise of approximately 60 hours. (25% of total A level) Assessment Criteria The specification followed is the one offered by AQA. The course is assessed by coursework and a final examination. At both AS & A2 Level there is one Practical Coursework component and one written examination. Course requirements and progression To follow the Design & Technology course within the sixth form you would be expected to have achieved a Grade B in GCSE Design and Technology. Many students combine their Design & Technology A or AS Level with Mathematics and Physics to study Engineering at university, whilst others follow a more creative route, combining it with Art & Design and English to study a range of Arts based degrees.
