Going green

New printing techniques and carbon offsetting project will see Global Custodian ’ s magazines produced in a climate friendly way .

This issue has a different feel to it , literally . While I don ’ t expect you , the reader , to be as interested in the paper specifications and grams per square metre as I am , what I ’ m sure you ’ ll be pleased to know is that the publication you are holding has been produced in a climate neutral way .

Here at Global Custodian , we were inspired by the ESG drive of the industry that we report on day-in-day out . We became aware that – individually - we all factor environmental considerations into the food we buy , the production and packaging of personal items , and our own investments . So why would we not look to address our carbon footprint as a business ?
We may not have the same influence as the major organisations included within the text of this issue – though our eco move was covered by Print Business Magazine - but we still felt it was incumbent on us to act on the processes we do have .
Therefore , going forward , each publication will be manufactured using 100 % offshore wind electricity sourced from UK wind , while 100 % of the inks used for printing are vegetable oil based .
In addition , 95 % of press chemicals are then recycled for further use and , on average , 99 % of any waste associated with the productions will be recycled and the remaining 1 % used to generate energy .
The papers chosen to produce the magazines are FSC ® certified . The Forest Stewardship Council ® runs a global certification system that ensures timber produced in certified forests has been traced from the tree to the end user .
Finally , we ’ ll be participating in the ‘ Clean Drinking Water in India initiative ’ as a carbon offset project . In India , more than two million children die from cholera or typhoid fever each year . Such diseases are spread mainly through drinking water . But only 32 % of households in India have access to treated water .
The project organises the chemical treatment of water using chlorine . The chloride solution is made on site , and the water is conveniently available in small village shops or delivered to people ’ s homes . This scheme contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ), SDG 1 ; No Poverty , SDG 3 ; Good Health and Well-Being , SDG 4 ; Quality Education , SDG 6 ; Clean Water and Sanitation , and SDG 13 ; Climate Action .’
I would like to thank our new printing partner , Park Communications , for making this possible , and our internal team for keeping us accountable for every action we take .
Much like the innovation and transformation that ’ s occurring within the securities services industry , it ’ s always easier to keep doing things the way you always have done , and it ’ s usually cheaper as well . But that doesn ’ t mean it ’ s better .
I ’ m writing this note because we ’ re proud to have made this change , we hope it ’ s just the start of reviewing everything we do as a brand , and we hope it inspires others too .
