KERCHING…MAKE THAT CHANGE! To many people, using the words ‘savings account’ and ‘zombie’ in the same sentence is a sign of madness. Not according to consumer group Which? who in July 2014 discovered that a third of the nation’s 2,000 savings accounts are zombie accounts, paying interest as low as 0.1% or less5. With our research finding that one in ten people (10%) check their finances only every six months or more it is clear that every minute of inaction and procrastination over personal finances are costing British savers dear. Our research found that over half of people (53%) save using a standard savings account. Of this group of savers three in ten (30%) say they are dissatisfied with this method of saving, with a whopping nine in ten of these (92%) blaming low interest rates. It is hardly surprising then that our research found nearly half of people (46%) say they are interested in trying alternative ways of saving money. The time has clearly come to ditch the zombies once and for all, and embrace the alternatives.
