THE COST OF PROCRASTINATION TO BRITISH BUSINESS EACH YEAR IS
£76,000,000,000
THE EXPERT’S VIEW
Humans are highly motivated, so it’s strange that
our inner demons cause us to procrastinate too.
According to psychologists, Ferrari, Johnson
and McCown, we procrastinate because of the
assumptions we regularly make – both underand over-estimating how much time things will
take us or how motivated we’ll be at another
date (‘I’ll want to do it tomorrow morning’).
These assumptions give us permission to stall.
Insecurity and self-doubt can also play a major
role in procrastination. If you feel something
is overwhelming to do or that you’re not good
enough to do it, you may well procrastinate
and do something you find easier instead.
