The Appleby family arrived in La Jolla in the early 1970s and soon after Mary Appleby , Scott and Kerry ’ s mother , became involved in a multitude of San Diego ’ s charitable and educational organizations : Junior League , Reuben H . Fleet Science Center , ARK and Old Globe Theatre . Their father , Addison , served on the San Diego Tennis Patrons Board and on the Bishop ’ s School Board of Trustees . The children learned at a young age the importance of supporting the community through volunteerism , education , sports and the arts .
