Animation Academy
Kicking off 2023 with Animation and Comic Art Legends
The Museum ’ s new headline exhibit , “ The Animation Academy : From Pencils to Pixels ” invites visitors to transport themselves behind the scenes where imagination becomes reality . The many interactive stations in this exhibition provide opportunities for visitors to experiment and create their own stopmotion animated short , learn about the art of storyboarding , go behind the scenes with artists and animators , snap photos in the sets of their favorite animated TV shows , and see the world ’ s largest traveling 3D zoetrope . From traditional hand-drawn cels to exciting breakthroughs in stop-motion and CGI , visitors can see how their favorite characters came to life .
The greats of the comics art world shine in “ Cover Story ,” an exhibit displaying program covers and art , including original drawings , from the Comic-Con convention over the past 50 + years and featuring comic artists such as Will Eisner , Jack Kirby and Jim Lee .
Popular Arts for All
The Museum ’ s mission is to celebrate comics and related popular arts to all . One way it makes its popular arts wonderland accessible is by artsinspired education through its Education Center and School Access Fund , which helps defray costs for San Diego Title 1 school field trips .
