Nobel Laureate and Distinguished Professor at the J . Craig Venter Institute , Dr . Hamilton Smith , affectionately known by colleagues as Ham , has retired at the age of 89 , after an extraordinary career .
Ham personifies the defining qualities of our Institute with his boundless curiosity , passion and continuous pursuit of scientific discovery . We are grateful to have him as a part of the JCVI family , and now we seek to formally recognize his career achievements with the Hamilton O . Smith Fund .
