Sunflower Gymnastics awarded their first Academic Scholarship for $ 1,500 to athlete and coach Connor DeJesus , a 2016 graduate from Emporia High School attending Emporia State University .
DeJesus has been with Sunflower Gymnastics for nine years , competing with the trampoline and tumbling team for eight of those years . He joined the staff at the gym in 2013 as an assistant coach and has grown into a “ wonderful lead coach .”
“ Connor is a wonderful athlete , coach , and person and we are so proud to be able to award him this scholarship . We have been waiting for this moment for a long time ,” said Sunflower Co-owner David Doemland . “ Connor is a wonderful positive role model in the gym and the kids love him .”
Sunflower Gymnastics established the scholarship program in 2016 and looks forward to being able to continue supporting trampoline and tumbling athletes as they continue their education .
The purpose of the Sunflower Gymnastics academic scholarship is to provide monetary assistance for athletes in need who wish to continue to train and compete for Sunflower Gymnastics during their college career . It is the desire of Sunflower Gymnastics that by helping provide college tuition and education fees the athlete is able to focus

Sunflower Gymnastics was established in 2004 and is owned and operated by Stacie and David Doemland , with locations in Emporia and Burlington .

DISTRICT HONORS RETIRING EMPLOYEES

Thirty-two retiring teachers , administrators and school support staff members were guests of honor at the annual Emporia Public Schools Staff Recognition May 18 at Emporia High School .
“ Collectively , these individuals have devoted more than 700 years to Emporia Public Schools . Over a span of four decades , they have had a huge impact on the lives of children in our community ,” said Superintendent Theresa Davidson .

Market tonight
Emporia ’ s Farmers Market is now open Wednesdays beginning at 5 p . m . Tonight ’ s market will feature fresh , local produce , baked goods , herbs , plants , eggs , salads and a “ Veggie Art ” competition at the kiosk . Staff from ECKAN will be there with vouchers for food for seniors who meet the income guidelines . The market is held in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street . The Saturday market opens at 8 a . m .
City band Thursday
Emporia ’ s Municipal Band performs at 8 p . m . Thursday in Fremont Park ,
Fourth Avenue and Union Street . The music will celebrate children and the National Teacher ’ s Hall of Fame . Bring lawn chairs or blankets .
Ice Cream social
Neosho Rapids Methodist United Methodist Women will hold it ’ s first Ice Cream Social of the summer at 5:30 p . m . Saturday at the Neosho Rapids Community Building . The social will be a free-will offering . They will be serving homemade ice cream , pie and cake , sandwiches and drinks . There will also be a bake table . The Bazaar Quilt will be on display .
Admire Alumni and Student Reunion
The 104th annual Admire High School Alumni and Student Reunion will be held Saturday . All Admire students , teachers and families are invited to attend . Social hour will begin at 4 p . m . followed by dinner at 5:30 . The cost is $ 15 per person . Reservations : 620-528-3407 .
