Pats on the back
EDITOR’S NOTE: Once a week, The Gazette
salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back.
✦✦Donors and volunteers for The Salvation Army, who
helped make the holidays brighter by donating items
for Christmas distribution. The items were distributed last week.
✦✦Employees of ESB Financial, who donated a check to
the community for $12,713.72 on behalf of the United
Way campaign.
✦✦Riverside Elementary student Angela Alvarado, who
was awarded the 2015 Outstanding Student Technology Award from the Kansas Infinitec Coalition. The
award was presented Dec. 11.
✦✦The Northern Heights High School basketball
team, which won against Herington recently, 59-28.
✦✦Emporia High School band director Bob Haselhuhn
and Laura Schwinn, a journalism teacher, who were
awarded Hopkins awards on Dec. 18. They both received a $2,000 cash award.
✦✦Emporia High School Lady Spartans basketball
team, which won a match against the Topeka High
Trojans, 44-27.
✦✦Donors to The Salvation Army Red Kettles, who
helped the organization reach its $50,000 goal with
several days to go.
✦✦The Kansas Turnpike, which broke ground on improvements to the Bazaar cattle pens. The finished
product will have a viewing area of the cattle pens.
✦✦The Emporia Police Department Benefit Association, which adopted the Goodyear family for Christmas this year. The association partners with the
Department for Children and Families to find a local
family each year to help.
✦✦Monique-A-Wish, which made Christmas a little
brighter for local families recently. The local organization was formed by John Scott after his daughter
died at birth.
✦✦Mrs. Claus, who spread Christmas cheer at Newman
Regional Health recently. This is the 15th year she
visited patients and staff at Newman along with Santa
and a few elves.
