the wire-rimmed wheels .
“ That was tedious work — but worth it ,” he said . “ This truck was a basket case when my dad bought it . The truck bed was gone , the cab was rusted , the doors were rusted . It took almost two years , but they brought it back to its original state .”
Even the paint color is as close to the original as possible . During the restoration , they got lucky and found some of the original blue paint on the gas tank . The paint shop was able to match it , and now the former rusty “ basket case ” is a gleaming blue and black piece of functioning history .
Joe ’ s father put about 2,000 miles on the truck , but Joe plans to add a lot more
now that he has the keys .
“ I do drive it around locally ,” Joe said . “ It can comfortably do 40 to 45 miles per hour . Anything faster than that and I worry about it , so I don ’ t take it out on the highway or for long distances .”
He plans to keep the truck in the family , although he refuses to say which of the children will get it .
“ I ’ m letting them decide that for themselves ,” Joe said .
“ I don ’ t know . I have my eye on the 1965 Mustang he ’ s working on now ,” daughter Hannah Gast Colstrom said .
In addition to the cars , the event offered a silent auction of unique items made by club members out of various car parts — including a replica of the Starship Enterprise — as well as a variety of food vendors . The annual event is a fundraiser , with
proceeds going toward Flint Hills Technical College Automotive Technology scholarships . Emporia Flatland Cruisers sponsors a $ 500 scholarship each spring and another $ 500 scholarship in the fall .
“ Emporia Flatland Cruisers is all about having fun and enjoying the vehicles ,” Sherry Jones , the group ’ s secretary / treasurer said . “ Everybody brings different kinds of cars — there will be classics , there will be originals , there will be hot rods , there will be old ratty cars that you don ’ t think will make it down the highway , but they end up being some of the safest . We just enjoy all the cars . And it doesn ’ t hurt to raise a little money while you ’ re having fun — especially for such a good cause as the Automotive Technology scholarships .”
