Elpha Izetta Springeman
Elpha Izetta Springeman , 91 , passed away , Wednesday , July 20 , 2016 at the Life Care Center in Burlington , Kansas .
She was born March 10 , 1925 on the family farm near Lebo , the daughter of Owen and Maude Robinson Sullivan . Elpha attended Lebo High School and graduated with the Class of 1943 .
In October 1944 she was joined in marriage to Francis Springeman . They enjoyed over 50 years together until her husbands death on June 21 , 1997 . Elpha and Francis would raise their family in Burlington , Kansas until moving to Emporia in 1965 . Elpha worked at the U . S . D . 253 Board of Education Office until her retirement in 1988 .
Her many interests included spending time in her garden and traveling around the world . Elpha was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church , TOPS and a life time member of the V . F . W . Auxillary . She was also a volunteer with the Widow and Widowers Support Group .
She will be held dear to the hearts of her daughter , Mary Anderson and her husband Marshall of Lebo ; sons , Ronald Springeman and wife Betty of Eskridge , Michael Springeman and wife Susan of Iola ; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren . She was preceded in death by her husband ; parents ; four brothers , Russell “ Bud ”, Merle , Tom and Jack ; four grandchildren , David Springeman , Kelli Fagar , Sherri Fager and Donald Springeman .
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 A . M ., Monday , July 25 , 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia . Burial will follow services at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo . The rosary will be recited at 6:30 P . M ., Sunday evening at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo . The family will receive friends following the rosary from 7:00 until 8:00 P . M .

LONDON — The estate of former Beatle George Harrison is complaining about the use of his music at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland .
Harrison ’ s family tweeted Friday that the use of the song “ Here Comes the Sun ” during the introduction of candidate Donald Trump ’ s daughter Ivanka was not authorized and was “ offensive and against the wishes of the George Harrison estate .”
Rocker Paul Rodgers also complained about the use of his “ All Right Now ” at the climax of Trump ’ s speech .
Earlier in the convention , Queen guitarist Brian May and the band Queen complained about the use of the band ’ s 1977 hit “ We

CLARIFICATIONS
To clarify a story which ran in the July 22 edition of The Gazette , the Community Corrections Youth group will be assisting with a “ dry ” car wash and lunch . All proceeds from the car wash will go to the First Christian Church .

A newspaper in the Italian town where Luciano Pavarotti lived says the late tenor ’ s loved ones were also unhappy that the Trump campaign played one of his signature arias , “ Nessun Dorma .” The Gazzetta di Modena on Thursday quoted Pavarotti ’ s widow , Nicoletta Mantovani Pavarotti , and other family members as saying in a statement that the “ values of brotherhood and solidarity ” that Pavarotti expressed in his career “ are incompatible with the world vision proposed ” by Trump .
During the U . S . primary season , both the Rolling Stones and Adele complained that the Trump campaign was using their songs without permission .

Wanda Rae ( Riggs ) Howard

Wanda Rae ( Riggs ) Howard , 85 , was born on September 24 , 1930 , in Burns , Kansas to Clifford A . Riggs and Velma ( Fink ) Riggs . She passed away on July 14 , 2016 , in Topeka , Kansas . She formerly lived in El Dorado , Kansas ; Emporia , Kansas ; Woodward , Oklahoma ; Miami , Oklahoma ; Montrose , Colorado ; and Derby , Kansas .
She graduated from El Dorado High School , in 1948 from El Dorado , Kansas , and worked for Southwestern Bell as an operator and managed Best Western motels until retirement .
On August 2 , 1953 , she married James Wesley Howard , Jr ., in El Dorado , Kansas and the following year their only son , Danny Ray Howard , was born on July 12 , 1954 .
Wanda is survived by her son , Danny Ray Howard ( Goddard ); two granddaughters , Ashley ( Howard ) Charest and her husband Aaron Charest ( Topeka ), Chancy Howard ( Goddard ); step-grandchildren , Brett Layman , Shynne Layman ( El Dorado ); and two great-grandchildren , Ainsley Morgan Charest and Alexandria Murano Charest ( Topeka ).
She is preceded in death by her parents ; husband ; and brother , Harold M . Goodwin .
Wanda has elected not to have any funeral service , but the burial service for herself and her husband Jim will be on August 2 , 2016 , at 11 am at the Burns Cemetery . That day would have been Jim and Wanda ’ s 63rd Wedding Anniversary . Immediately following the burial , family and friends are invited to the Burns United Methodist Church for a light lunch and social . No flowers requested , but donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society , 1315 SW Arrowhead Road , Topeka , KS 66604 .

The Humane Society of the Flint Hills is currently seeking dedicated individuals to serve on the Board of Directors . The Board is responsible for the management of the Emporia Animal Shelter and the care of the animals . This is a working board . The Kansas Department of Agriculture is making available historic brand applications ( whether expired , canceled or still in use brands ) dating back to 1939 . The original applications used to register brands in Kansas are an important piece of history , not only for Kansas , but also for the family legacies touched by brands .
The paper brand applications will be distributed free of charge for a limited time on a first come , first serve basis .
