BRECKENRIDGE PROJECT GAINS CLEARANCE

By John Robinson john @ emporia . com
After making some changes to the parking plans for the Breckenridge Hotel and Convention Center , the project received approval from the National Parks Service .
“ It was our umpteenth appeal to the National Parks Service they did override their previous denial and approved our plans ,” said John Mallon , principle co-owner . “ That approved us for federal historic tax credits .”
Originally slated for an opening in the fall of 2014 , getting NPS approval was the main focus for Mallon when he spoke with the Gazette in March . At the time , Mallon said the nature of the project was one of the main hurdles for the NPS .
“ Traditionally , schools are converted to low-income subsidized tax credit housing and that ’ s about it ,” he said . “ So , we ’ re kind of breaking the mold in a conversion to the hotel conference center .”
According to Mallon , the project has lost the parking out front , but will keep in compliance with ADA standards and keep the drive up in the front of the building with a canopy .
“ It was a little bit of give and take but we ’ re one step closer ,” Mallon said . “ We ’ re
not quite there but we ’ re one step closer .”
The hotel will have 87 guest rooms and 15,500 feet of meeting space along with an exercise area and additional space to add on rooms .
Mallon said the next step for the project is to secure all the funding sources , a task Mallon said has already been underway .
“ It ’ s getting all of the funding sources in place for the project and then we ’ ll be ready to go ,” Mallon said . “ Because of the tax credits and all , it ’ s a much more difficult project than normal . Because it ’ s in a blighted area and because it ’ s downtown ... the bankers have no sense of humor and that ’ s why these tax credits are important for a project like ours .”
Even though there is still more to be done with the project , Mallon said this milestone is encouraging .
“ It feels very good to get over the hurdle ,” he said . “ It took a concerted effort by not only our preservation consultant but by the Kansas Historical Society . They stood by our project ... and pled our case for us on this appeal .”
Mallon didn ’ t want to guess at a completion date for the Breckenridge at this time , but said co-owner Steve Haught is predicting “ they ’ ll be placing the mints on the pillows in ‘ 17 .”

“ We tend to turn to poetry , if we turn to it at all , in times of celebration or loss or upheaval or transition ,” says Eric McHenry , the Poet Laureate of Kansas “... But the pleasures of reading it can be rich and deep and satisfying and daily , and different from those offered by other art forms .”
From 10:30 a . m . to 2:30 p . m . Saturday , McHenry will lead a hands-on workshop in the art of poetry writing , including a creative exercise .
