THERE’S
FOR
Construction to improve
drainage south of Emporia
at mile marker 116 and 118
on I-35/KTA is set to begin
today and will be completed
in late November, weather
permitting.
The project will increase
the capacity of current reinforced concrete box culverts
beneath the Turnpike to
improve drainage near the
roadway.
Construction will begin
on the southbound side of
I-35/KTA. All traffic will
use the northbound lanes,
between mile markers 116
and 118.3, where there will
be a single 11.5-foot lane of
traffic in each direction. Following completion of southbound work, the northbound
side will be constructed with
traffic being moved to the
opposite side.
Drivers are urged to
check for construction up-
dates at www.kandrive.org,
subscribe to KTA Alerts for
roadway incident information at bit.ly/KHeX6g, follow the Kansas Turnpike on
Twitter, and watch for information on the KTA’s digital
message boards. Construction updates on this and
other projects are published
monthly in KTA’s electronic
newsletter.
The project includes
replacing, lengthening or
adding culverts to existing
drainage. The current single
cell structure (7’x7’) at mile
marker 116 will be replaced
with a double cell structure
(14’x12’). At mile marker
118, the existing single cell
structure (8’x8’) will be
lengthened 20’ to the north
and 17’6” to the south. In addition, a single cell structure
(12’x8’) will be constructed
on each side of the existing/
lengthened structure.
Hamm Inc. of Perry, Kansas is the general contractor
for this project.

Special to The Gazette
The Sojadi District of the
Jayhawk Area Council, Boy
Scouts of America held their
first Friends of Scouting
(FOS) breakfast this morning
at Nona’s Restaurant in the
Best Western. The breakfast
provided the opportunity for
community and business leaders to show their support for
Scouting, get an update of the
District along with enjoying
the fellowship of other supporters.
A strong gathering of business and community leaders
were treated to breakfast and
heard from Brandon Schrader,
Emporia State University student and Eagle Scout from
Troop 157 of Emporia. Brandon shared his Scouting experiences and the values that
it instilled in him as a young
adult. He was able to articulate the meaning and importance of Scouting to him and
his fellow Scouters. “Scouting has given me more than
I could have ever imagined.
Friends, skills, self-esteem
and motivation,” says Brandon of his experience.
