SUV ROLLOVER ON KANSAS TURNPIKE SENDS FIVE TO HOSPITAL

The Emporia Gazette
Two separate accidents on the Kansas Turnpike sent a total of six people to Newman Regional Health Wednesday .
Wednesday afternoon , a South Dakota family ’ s SUV rolled over at mile-marker 128 — just north of the Emporia Toll Plaza . All five people in the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Newman Regional Health .
At 2:25 p . m ., emergency crews were called to the scene of the single-vehicle wreck . According to the Kansas Turnpike Authority , 40-year-old Carlos David Moroyoquireyes of Kranzburg , South Dakota , was southbound when the rear , driver-side tire came apart and caused him to lose control of the 2004 Dodge Durango . The vehicle struck the barrier and overturned into the ditch .
Moroyoquireyes ’ wife , Norma , and their three children — ages 16 , 14 and 12 — were all injured and taken to the hospital via ambulance , though none of the injuries were life-threatening . All five were wearing their seatbelts .
Earlier in the day , one of two people involved in a one-vehicle wreck was transported to Newman with minor injuries when a car smashed through a fence and ended in a nearby field near the Emporia Terminal at milepost 127 .
At 10:15 a . m ., 50-yearold Tommie Britt of Terre Haute , Indiana , was entering the turnpike headed south . He took the curve on the on-ramp too fast and entered the ditch on the west side of the roadway , according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority . One passenger — Brandie Jo Green , 26 , of Pawnee Hills — was also in the 2002 Saturn at the time of the accident .
Scanner traffic at the time of the incident indicated one of the persons involved was transported , though information from the KTA did not confirm whether it was the driver or the passenger . Both Britt and Green were wearing their seatbelts .
